And so it begins

I had my first bout of nausea last night.  A new Culver's recently opened just minutes from our house, and a friend of mine had been raving about their "cheese curds."  Thinking about how much I love cheese, I decided I would get them and see what all the fuss was about.

As it turned out, Culver's cheese curds are breaded and deep-fried.  (I guess I thought they'd just be giving me some lumps of cheese.)  Normally I have no problem eating fried cheese, but after a few cheese curds, I was feeling decidedly nauseated and had to throw the rest away.

This feeling continued as I fed our dogs.  Normally the smell of their food doesn't affect me at all--it's dry food, so it's not very strong-smelling--but last night it struck me as really gross and sent another wave of nausea through me as I was scooping it out.  Ick.

Apart from the usual times one might get nauseated--stomach virus, food poisoning, hangovers, migraines--I normally don't get nausea.  (I worked in hospitals as a nurse for seven years, and if that won't get you past having your stomach turned by nasty smells, nothing will.)  So this was unusual for me.

I felt a little nauseous this morning, too, but after I ate an energy bar, it subsided.  I feel fine right now.

I am only 4 weeks, 1 day pregnant today.  Isn't that a little early for morning sickness?

  1. Not early at all. I know people who've had m/s before they even got a positive test. And is it wrong that I'm excited you are feeling nauseous? It's a GREAT sign!

  2. I keep eyeing that Culvers when I am at the surgery center:) I haven't eaten there yet though! Early nausea just means a good strong beta:) I hope:) I can't wait to hear the results from your blood draw tomorrow! Make MM dish out the doggie food for right now!

  3. Mine started right around 5 weeks. I always thought woman were making it up when it happened that early, but then I experienced it. It is a great sign of a healthy pregnancy, but if it gets worse DEFINITELY talk to your doctor about getting some Zofran - it saved me MANY times!

  4. I had the nausea hit really early too. I thought it wouldn't kick in until around 6 weeks, but I was already having issues when I got my BFP, and it lasted until my HCG was nearly zero'd out with the loss.

I found a few things that would sit well and started keeping them handy for when the nausea hit!

  8. Hang in there S...nausea is nature's way of saying congratulations! Hope it won't be too bad for you. For me, I ate a small snack every two hours (day and night) to trick my stomach from feeling hunger pains which for me seemed to bring on the nausea. OH and I took diclectin or US version of zofran.

  11. Nausea in pregnancy comes from a person's sensitivity to hCG, so your level is probably nice and high. With each of my pregnancies the nausea started earlier and abated later, and was worse (I second an earlier commenter on getting Zofran if it gets bad). With the latest pregnancy, nausea and vomiting hit me hard at 4 weeks and lasted till week 20 (I lost 25 pounds on account of incessant vomiting).
    Congrats on your pregnancy!
